Wild Bluebell Leather Guide
Leather Tanning Information
Leather tanning is the transformation from raw hides to leather. There are different methods, each with their own benefits, quirks and qualities.
First, we have Vegetable Tanning - the OG of leather tanning. It's like nature's secret recipe, using tannins from tree barks, fruits, and leaves. This method creates leather that's not just durable and pliable, but also ages like a fine wine. It's the go-to choice for traditional craftsmanship and artisanal magic; aka Wild Bluebell's #1!
Now, let's talk about Chrome Tanning - the rockstar of the tanning world. It's modern, it's flashy, and it's everywhere! This method uses chromium salts to speed up the tanning process, resulting in soft and water-resistant leather. Just beware, this wild child can be a bit harmful to the environment; not preferred for Wild Bluebell.
And then we have Aldehyde Tanning, the undercover star. This method uses aldehyde (formaldehyde, to be specific!) to create leather that's flexible, lightweight, and resistant to water. It's saving the day for gloves, specialty car leather, etc. Since Wild Bluebell is on making car seats or gloves, we are not using this specific kind of leather.
Each tanning method has its own charm and specialties, allowing us to bring you an assortment of leathery delights. At Wild Bluebell, we've fallen head over heels for the tantalizing transformation of Vegetable-Tanned Leathers, creating one of a kind products.
Leather Grade Information
While Wild Bluebell only uses top (and sometimes medium for product lining) grade leather, there is a three grade rating system. Our best breakdown is included below.
At the top of our leather hierarchy is the Crème de la Crème, the Top Grade leather. This leather is as luxurious as it gets, with impeccable craftsmanship and the finest materials. It's buttery soft, with a smooth texture that feels like heaven on your fingertips. Top Grade leather is perfect for those who crave the absolute best in terms of durability, appearance, and overall feel.
Next up Medium Grade leather. This grade offers a perfect balance between affordability and fabulousness. It's versatile, durable, and comes in a variety of stylish finishes and colors. With its moderate price tag, it's perfect for those who want to stay on-trend without compromising on their budget.
Lastly, Lower Grade leather. While it might not have all the bells and whistles of the higher grades, it still provides a solid and reliable choice for leather enthusiasts on a budget. It may not be as buttery soft or as flawless in appearance, but it still offers a stylish look and reasonable durability.
Leather Care Information
Wild Bluebell pieces are handmade using centuries-old leathercraft techniques. All pieces are made to last a lifetime.
- Store your clutch in a dry, flat place.
- If bent for too long, leather will reform so make sure to store with care.
- Use a dry cloth to clean and move to a slightly damp cloth for any challenging clean-ups.
- Do not use any chemicals or cleaners on your purchase.
- If you see a cloudy ring around the stone, know this is normal: it is residue from the glue used to secure the stone. Wipe the residue away with a slightly damp cloth.
If your clutch has an agate stone, and is dropped resulting in the stone breaking, contact Ellie - ellie@wildbluebell.co - for repair.
